Simple Living, High Thinking !!

Mahatma Gandhi was once asked to describe an ideal life style and he responded by saying "Simple Living and High Thinking". I completely agree with his thoughts and have tried (though not fully successfully) to emulate this in my own life.

Simple living is the right way to live. One does not get lasting happiness by living a flashy lifestyle. We do not need branded clothes to wear or have wardrobes full of designer clothes. Simple fare would be far better than straining our system with huge variety of exotic food frequently. Partying every other night neither wins us lifelong friends nor does it permanently remove our boredom. To commute one does not need top end vehicles - I am not advocating public transport (esp. in India) for those who can afford private transportation. However, no point in having huge fuel guzzling vehicles to move around.

If we were to reduce our needs to the bare minimum, we would start being less demanding on the precious and limited resources of the earth. We would start showing consideration for our fellow beings (human and others too) who may not be as well endowed as us. By reducing our demand, we would check inflation and help in making things more affordable for the poor.

High thinking is what will help us in our evolution path. Human beings are superior because we can think far better than other beings. We should make use of this faculty to probe further into the real purpose of our existence and what we need to do to reach our goals. High thinking also refers to rising above petty and mundane issues. As ones spiritual growth increases, one tends to think about higher things and does not get trapped and lost in the usual worldly matters.

Just look all round; Look at the ocean, look at the sky; How can you manage not to be simple and not to be humble? - Osho

"Most people try to know more to become more clever every day, where as I attempt to become more simple and uncomplicated everyday." Zen expression

My heart says to agree with your learning immidiatly . however my brain tells me that this is not possible in todays competive world. Sure it sounds soo nice and tempting and has a feel good factor attached to it .. but lets be real ... who doesnt want the matirals in their life ? which person isnt matirialsitic . however it is a moot point just as there is no "Self less deed" i know i am going away from the topic .. but hey this is what i think .. but a good post never the less .. enjoyed reading .. but hate to say .. not practicle .. these vales were and could be practiced when money did not motivate us . it was our ideals wihich motivated us and out leaders. i think many ppl are hating me right now .. but idc abt it . so n joy .. again a good post and since i dont wanna post my google account here .. coz of security reasons i am posting this as anonymous but i am Nipun jain .. my email id is Nipunjain.3992@gmail.com. i would love to hear back from you if its possible

I work as a senior executive in one of India's most reputed IT companies. Struggling to keep myself existent amid cut throat rivalry, selfishness, greed and complexities of the corporate world has become an order of the day. Life has typically become a race, a struggle to exist. But to what extent? In order to keep up with the pace to excel, I land up working in such an environment for more than 14 to 16 hours a day, sometimes sacrificing my weekly offs as well and still unsure of my future; still being penalized, humiliated and held accountable anything you name it; do you want me to reckon this as life? I doubt so. It is just a modernized version of slavery, a product of an abominable cult called modernization. I sometimes wonder, why can't we lead a simpler life, a life full of love, passion, creativity, respect and adoration; a life which is productive from its true sense, a life where people only need to work to lead a healthy life and materialize their own dream that might be far fetched but aims to make life more convenient, more fruitful more resource oriented yet simple i.e. the one that aims only toward attainment of the basic physical necessities, education, knowledge and spiritual enhancement. After all its happiness that counts; nothing else matters.
